Demolition Derby

J&J Demolition Derby, 5 p.m. Sept. 2. The “J&J Demolition Derby” is a Labor Day tradition where fenders fly on the Allentown Fairground’s historic racetrack as drivers crash and smash into each other in qualifying heats until the last vehicle running becomes “The Beast of the East Champion.” Three fender-crunching heats, Full-Size Cars, 1980s “Chain & Bang” and Compact Cars, will return to the Fair. This year, there will be an exhibition of battery-operated riding toys, “Power Wheels.” The “Kids Power Wheels” exhibition allows children ages 4-10 to show off their driving skills on the historic racetrack. The J&J website notes, “This event is for fun.” The website has detailed rules for each heat. For Full-Size Cars, prizes are: $1,000, Winner; $400, Runner-up, and $100, Third place; for 1980s Chain & Bang, $800, Winner; $300, Runner-up, and $100, Third place, and Compact Cars, $1,000, Winner; $400, Runner-up, and $100, Third place. Entrants are to use Pit Gate No. 6 at Liberty Street. The gate opens at noon Sept. 2 and closes at 4 p.m. Sept. 2. No cars will be registered after the pit gate closes. J&J Demo Motorsports Entertainment Specialists wishes all a “Simply Smashing 2024.”
