LHS romps Pennridge in opener

Team don’t want to get too excited after one week of football, but Liberty certainly showed they might be ready to turn the corner this season after last week’s 40-14 road win at Pennridge.

Gabe Green was the star of the show for the Hurricanes, taking home two 90-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns and punching in two rushing scores.

Liberty led 28-7 at halftime and extended the lead to 40-7 in the third quarter of a dominant opener.

“At this point every win is big and we celebrate them all pretty equally,” said head coach Shawn Daignault.” On paper we were pretty similar with Pennridge, but we got a lot of talented teams left on our schedule.”

Friday’s opener was also the debut of junior quarterback Antonio Fontanez, who transferred back to Liberty after spending last season at Central Catholic.

He finished 10-of-19 for 162 yards, but didn’t make many mistakes.

“Antonio was really efficient,” said Daignault. “Don’t think he had any bad decisions and threw some really nice passes. He had nice chemistry with Jake Pukszyn (six catches, 93-yards) and they looked like two kids that have been playing together their whole lives.

“Quarterback is so important in football. To have it be a guy that played with most of our team growing up and they’re all still friends, so it was easy to integrate him. Happy to have a guy that has nine varsity wins in the EPC at the position.”

Green led the backfield with two rushing scores, but Liberty threw out a three-headed committee with Adrian Deleon and Braden McKinley also picking rushing TD’s as well. Deleon led the team with 55 yards and Green and McKinley each had 33 yards on the ground.

“Gabe got faster and stronger in the offseason and has a nice burst,” said Daignault. “With three running backs we were able to distribute the ball.”

Now the ‘Canes face a short week by playing on Thursday night at J. Birney Crum against Central Catholic. Kickoff is also late 7:30 p.m. start and will be a litmus test for where Liberty is on the year against a perennial league contender in the Vikings, who topped Trinity 18-0 last week.

“Central is good and they got some talented kids,” Daignault said. “Real aggressive group of linebackers that can run. They’re solid and well coached and we’ll have our work cut out for us.

“We are certainly happy with our team now. Culturally there’s been a shift where guys understand what we expect. Have some really good leaders.”
