N. Catty officers lauded for assisting in standoff

Two North Catasauqua Police Department officers were presented with a certificate of commendation for meritorious service during the Aug. 19 meeting of North Catasauqua Borough Council. The commendation was presented by police Chief Christopher Wolfer.

In April, the two officers were called to assist Lehigh Township police in a standoff with an armed male under extreme mental distress who had barricaded himself in his home.

Lehigh Township Police Department cited Sgt. Antonio Tramonte and Patrolman Samuel Safadi as instrumental assets in convincing this individual to surrender peacefully during a high-stress situation. The two officers received a strong round of applause from council and those in attendance.

Wolfer also reported on the successful addition of a certified police officer to assist within Catasauqua Area School District.

There was also a discussion of considering crime watch or community watch signs to be made available in the community. These are fairly common sights in other communities. This will be taken up at a future meeting.

The existing handicapped parking ordinance was also discussed. It will be subject to review and amendments in the future. There is an increasing need for these.

In other business, a year-old pending project to replace municipal building doors and related hardware for $4,810 was unanimously approved to move forward.

Also at the meeting, Mayor William Molchany reported three additional Hometown Hero signs have been ordered.
