Hornet boys go 2-1 in tourney

The Emmaus High School boys basketball team concluded its summer offseason of competition on top with a winning record at the Awesome Fest A-Throwdown, the final major summer tournament, held at Cedar Beach in Allentown during the last weekend in July.

The Green Hornets won two of three games overall in pool play, but scoring differential kept them from qualifying for Sunday’s playoff format. The lone defeat was by just two points as they were that close to going undefeated and making the playoffs.

On Thursday evening in the opener, Emmaus defeated Northeast High School 42-20, the largest margin of victory for them in the tournament.

Jack Csensits, Owen Hafner and Chase Whitesell all finished with nine points in the win to pace the offense. Hafner also recorded nine rebounds.

Later that night, the Green Hornets were downed 45-43 to Muhlenberg. Jake Ross had a game-high 18 points and brought down nine rebounds.

After a night off Friday, Emmaus was back in action Saturday for the third and final game of pool play. The Green Hornets took down Bensalem 32-31, holding on in the end.

The program as a whole still found success as the freshman team ran through the playoff bracket and won it all, bringing home gold. Ty Laird, Max Socci and Ben Grochowski were all named to the All-Tournament team, while Teddy Laird earned Beast of the Tournament recognition.

In the varsity tournament, it was a pair of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference teams in the championship game as Parkland defeated Pocono Mountain West for the title.
