The Salisbury High School girls basketball team had a successful run at the Awesome Fest Throwdown, the final major summer tournament, held at Cedar Beach in Allentown during the last weekend in July.
The Falcons went undefeated in pool play, winning all three of their games to advance to the playoff format. The run ended with a loss in the quarterfinal round.
First-year head coach Jason Laky was happy with how his team performed over the weekend and how it will help heading into the varsity season this winter.
“This weekend was a big confidence boost to our program moving forward,” said Laky. “It has been really good for the girls to be playing in the summer. They haven’t played a lot during the summer for a few years. We have a nice group of returning players and some incoming freshmen that will really help us build the program.”
In pool play, Salisbury first defeated Holy Cross 29-27 in the opener, then took down Hamburg 19-9, before finishing off as bracket winners by beating Bethlehem Christian 23-21.
“It was a successful run in the group,” Laky said. “The girls really played well on both ends of the court and really enjoyed playing together.”
The Falcons ended up on the wrong side of things in the quarterfinals as they lost to Tamaqua 29-15 to end the tournament.
“Realizing they certainly can win any game they compete in is a nice confidence boost,” said Laky. “It’s a good group of kids that want to learn and be coached. The goals have been set for the upcoming season and I know I’m looking forward to it and so are they. The parent support is also part of this and very important to have a successful program.”
Salisbury also went 8-3 in the City of Allentown Summer League.
