There is a senior expo set for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 12 at Bethany Wesleyan Church, 675 Blue Mountain Drive, Cherryville. The expo is free to attend, and light refreshments will be available.

Exhibitors from state and local agencies, businesses and other organizations will be on hand to provide information and answer questions important to senior citizens. Free health screenings, including vision, balance and blood pressure, will be offered.

Flu shots will be available, pending manufacturing.

CarFit, an educational program for seniors to learn how well their personal vehicles “fit” them, will also be on hand.

Reminder: Lehigh Township Historical Society will hold one more gravestone preservation workshop, scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Sept. 8. Take part in a hands-on basic gravestone cleaning demonstration.

Oplinger-Hower American Legion Post 899, of Lehigh Township, recently launched a Hometown Heroes banner program to honor the men and women of all branches of the military who served our country, whether in wartime or peace. The veteran must have been a resident of Lehigh Township.

Hometown Heroes banners are a unique way to show veterans their communities care about the sacrifices they have made for their country, both past and present.

All banners are printed on both sides. According to the company, banners are made of heavyweight block-out vinyl, which is extremely durable and holds up well for more than three years. The banner size will be 30 inches by 60 inches.

The company supplies high-quality aluminum brackets to mount the banners on poles where you would like the banner to be placed. These banners fly year-round.

To participate in this program, fill out a form with the first and last name, branch of service, what era, status (KIA/POW/MIA) or medals (Purple Heart/Silver Star/Bronze Star). A photo is also requested for the banner.

Forms can be picked up at American Legion Post 899, 1140 Municipal Road, Walnutport.

The banners will be installed by the Lehigh Township road crew on the poles near the veteran’s home. Banners like this can be seen in Northampton, Bath, Lehighton and so many other communities.

The objective is to have these Hometown Heroes banners on the poles by Veterans Day, Nov. 11. To accomplish this, your help is needed now.
