County commissioners honor fire company

Cetronia Fire Company’s centennial anniversary was recognized by Lehigh County Board of Commissioners during its Aug. 14 meeting.

The fire company was formed in January 1924 by 24 citizens with a common goal — to help the community. By May, the membership had grown to 305 members, appointing E.C.H. Glick as its president.

Cetronia Fire Company has been at its current location, 3950 Broadway, Allentown, since 1959.

“Throughout the years, the fire company has also been a community steward through various sponsorships and programs, and their social club is an important community partner and contributes funding annually to various area nonprofits and the fire department,” the board’s proclamation said.

“The volunteers and the leaders of the organization for 100 years have done their work with great fidelity and bravery,” board Chairman Geoff Brace said. “Currently, there’s 305 members of the company. That’s a significant organization, and I think we should give appreciation for the work that these individuals do.”

A special celebration will take place at the fire station Aug. 24.

In other business, the board distributed funds through the Community Development Block Grants to various organizations in the Lehigh Valley. The recipients include, among others, the Coplay Borough street resurfacing and reconstruction of 11th Street from Magna Drive to Chestnut Street to Poplar Street, in the amount of $185,471; Lehigh Career and Technical Institute for $30,000; Meal on Wheels for $15,000; and New Bethany Ministries for $44,103,000.

The board also awarded Northern Valley EMS $50,000 from the American Rescue Plan for the replacement of one ambulance and the remounting of three others.
