LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Vendors & volunteers

If it’s August, it must be Musikfest. As the festival cruised into its 41st year as a mainstay of summer, local food vendors and volunteers continued to be key ingredients in Musikfest’s recipe for sweet success, always hitting a high note year after year.

Yianni Kyziridis, owner of Pat’s Pizza and Bistro, cooks up some delicious appetizers at Service Electric Festplatz. “This is our fourth year. It’s wonderful but hot. Time goes by quickly,” Kyziridis said on the steamy afternoon of Aug. 3 as he whipped up delicious cheesesteak egg rolls, pepperoni bites, cheese curds and lasagna bites. Pat’s festing fare included artisan pizzas, meatballs, penne pasta, appetizers and more.
Jane and long time friend Arlene put the fun in festing as volunteers at the beer tent at Service Electric Festplatz. “I’m a Bethlehem girl,” Jane said, recalling attending Musikfest four decades ago and strolling through the Sun Inn Courtyard on her lunch break, where she saw Peter Tork of the Monkees performing. “It was just me and Peter Tork, an acoustic guitar and a beer,” Jane said. Now in her 28th year of volunteering, Jane said she likes the happy people, good music and good food. Arlene, of Phillipsburg, N.J., has been volunteering for 34 years. “I like seeing people you haven’t seen in a long time and people coming from everywhere,” Arlene said.

Lily Baker gets ready to ring up a customer at Pat’s Pizza and Bistro at Service Electric Festplatz. “It’s really hot but it’s fun. I wanted to give it a try,” Baker said of her first year working at Musikfest. Baker is a sophomore at Freedom HS and daughter of Nicole Taylor, manager of Pat’s restaurant at 1426 W. Broad St.
Santos and Miguel take the orders of hungry festers at Hogar Crea of Freemansburg at Martin Guitar Handwerkplatz. “We started with them,” Miguel said of Hogar Crea, which has been a vendor at Musikfest since the festival’s inception four decades ago. Hogar Crea offers such tasty eats as steak shish kabobs and rice chicken with beans.
The gang’s all here. Volunteers show their enthusiasm for Musikfest as they stand ready to tap some brews at the beer tent at Service Electric Festplatz.
“The Best of the Wurst”: Vanessa Sinnitz holds a long dog, Dave Schrad shows off knockwurst and Maycen Harryn displays bratwurst at Karl Ehmer’s Quality Meats at Service Electric Festplatz. “It’s nice being a local vendor here,” Sinnitz said, noting Karl Ehmer’s, which opened for business in 1932, has been part of Musikfest since 1986. She said it’s nice to see new faces as well as their regular patrons at 1645 Union Blvd., Allentown.
Fest-goers stop and look at festing fare at Karl Ehmer’s Quality Meats and Take a Taco at Service Electric Festplatz. Karl Ehmer’s has been at Musikfest since 1986, and Take a Taco is marking its 36th year at the fest. Owner George Pitsilos began Take a Taco as a restaurant in Whitehall in 1977. Pitsilos closed the restaurant in 1997, and Take a Taco Catering and Food Truck continues to offer tasty options at festivals such as Musikfest.
Volunteers Stephanie Mathers, Stephanie Milisits and Chenchen Fisher assist customers at the Musikfest merchandise tent, with Musikfest staffer Dawn Timko.
Tony Sabino and wife Judy take a brief break while volunteering at the Cash Conversion and Information Booth. Tony, who has been volunteering for 40 years, said he likes the experience of volunteering because, “It’s a lot of fun and we meet lots of good people,” said Judy, a volunteer for 23 years. “New first timers or veteran festers talk about their experiences festing, and it supports a good cause.”
Festers survey the culinary choices at Match Platz at The Wooden Match. Andrew Calderon, general manager of The Wooden Match, noted Match Platz, back for its 14th year, is not affiliated with Musikfest. “We’re excited to bring you live music acts on our outdoor stage every night during Musikfest’s 10 days,” Calderon said. The Wooden Match is located in proximity to Musikfest at 61 West Lehigh St.
Staff members of Taco Town are ready to welcome hungry patrons at Match Platz at The Wooden Match, where Taco Town does many events. The Cawley family owns Taco Town, which has two main locations on Airport Road and Lehigh Street in Allentown and five food trucks. They also cater corporate and private events and weddings.
