Theater Review: “Shakespeare for Kids” fantastic fun at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival

“Shakespeare for Kids,” presented at the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, makes the works of William Shakespeare more accessible for children and adults alike.

“Shakespeare for Kids” ran July 24 to Aug. 3 on the Main Stage, Labuda Center for the Arts, DeSales University.

This year’s production was based on Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” The play was adapted by Erin Sheffield and directed by Matt Pfeiffer. Andrew Kane was the composer of the score for the play.

Three actors worked double and triple duty, playing multiple characters with the help of hand puppets.

Tyler Borneo played the lost-at-sea brother Sebastian and the deluded butler Orsino, and himself.

Ciara Kelley played Countess Olivia and more with gusto and provided plenty of comic relief.

Gabrielle Moseley played Viola, who pretended to be a boy named Cesario, who advocated for Duke Orsino in his pursuit of the fair Countess Olivia. She also served as the narrator.

Moseley described iambic pentameter by patting on her heart as she spoke the lines.

As the actors romped through the scenes, with an occasional recitation of the Bard’s actual script, they engaged the audience in song.

There was a “word of the day.” Every time the word “ring” was spoken onstage, the audience was directed to say “woooo” and wave their arms.

The audience was also invited to do the “Shakespeare Hokey-Pokey.”

The Aug. 2 performance seen for this review was fantastic fun.
