Former Pittsburgh Steelers football great Rocky Bleier will speak during a benefit for scholarships for veterans presented by Lehigh Carbon Community College Foundation, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4, Glasbern Inn, Fogelsville.
Bleier’s talk begins at 5:30 p.m. and concludes with questions and answers and an opportunity to purchase a copy of his book, “Fighting Back,” and have it signed.
Bleier, an Appleton, Wisc., native, was a three-time all-state running back while at Xavier High School, played on the University of Notre Dame 1966 National Championship football team and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Toward the end of his rookie NFL season, he was drafted by the Army and fought in the Vietnam War. In 1969, his platoon was ambushed and he received rifle and grenade wounds that injured his legs and feet.
Doctors said that Bleier, a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient, would never play football again. Bleier overcame his injuries through two years of therapy.
Bleier rejoined the Steelers’ active roster in 1972, playing for 12 seasons in the NFL and in four Super Bowls, including the Steelers’ first Super Bowl in 1974. He retired from the Steelers in 1980.
The lessons that former NFL running back Bleier learned early in life helped him to overcome adversity and reach his goals on and off the football field.
The event begins at 4:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres.
