Respectfully Yours: Make sure internship works for you

Dear Jacquelyn,

My internship begins Sept. 1. How can I best prepare to have a positive experience?

Dear Reader,

During your internship, you create an impression of your personal career readiness through your words, actions, and contributions.

Before you begin, you’ll want to continue researching the company and gain a better understanding of the team dynamics.

Mastering internship etiquette is as crucial as acquiring technical skills for anyone stepping into the professional realm from the academic world. Embrace a willingness to learn, be a team player, and utilize time management.

Take this time to soak up all the valuable information available. Your colleagues and supervisors have a wealth of knowledge that is not found in any textbook. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and be sure to respond with a sincere thank-you.

Take advantage of networking opportunities. Recognize the role networking can play in your future career.

One place to start is by introducing yourself to colleagues in different departments. Attend company events, and workshops. Practice a short introduction and don’t hesitate to ask for advice from seasoned professionals.

While gaining work experience is the main purpose, building relationships is equally important. Taking advantage of networking opportunities is one of the best benefits of interning.

By implementing these practices, you will make a positive impression on colleagues and superiors while also laying a strong foundation for a future career.

Remember, an internship is more than just a temporary position; it’s a golden opportunity to learn, and to prepare for the challenges of the professional world.

Respectfully Yours,

Jacquelyn
