Passenger dies after exiting vehicle, then being run over

A 90-year-old South Whitehall woman died after she was run over by a motor vehicle around 1:20 p.m. Aug. 5 in the parking lot at 101 N. Cedar Crest Blvd., South Whitehall.

According to Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio, Evelyn M. Rushatz, was pronounced dead 2:03 p.m. Aug. 5 in the Emergency Room at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

He said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

The manner of her death was ruled an accident, Buglio said.

According to a South Whitehall Township Police Department news release, officers and emergency medical services responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the N. Cedar Crest Blvd., parking lot.

Rushatz, a passenger of a vehicle operated by an adult male, was struck by the vehicle after exiting from it.

She had apparent life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

“Since this is an ongoing investigation, and out of respect for the families involved in this tragic incident, no further information is available at this time,” the news release further states. “We would like to thank the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Crash Team, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, Cetronia Ambulance, as well as the Greenawalds Fire Company for their assistance at the scene.”
