Coplay: Positive thinking is influential

Coplay Borough Mayor Steve Burker’s quote for August comes from famous salesman Zig Ziglar and addresses the need to think positively: “One small positive thought can change your whole day.”

Reminder: Coplay Saengerbund, 205 S. Fifth St., continues its concert series with Sons of Izzy Aug. 16, Video Daze Aug. 23 and Social Call Aug. 30. Doors open 5 p.m.

There is a cover charge.

Also, the Saengerbund will hold its last dining on the terrace evening of the season Aug. 21. Doors will open 5 p.m., the kitchen opens 5-8:30 p.m., and Scott Erikson will play an acoustic set 6-9 p.m.

There is no cover charge.

The 43rd annual Coplay Community Days festival is scheduled for Aug. 23-25 at Coplay Parkway, Second and Keefer streets. There will be live music, food, a craft fair and more.

The event helps honor the local cement workers and cement industry.

The borough’s twilight summer concert series is held 6-9 p.m. at Coplay Community Plaza, Second and Chestnut streets. DNA performs Aug. 28, and 3 Varks takes the stage Sept. 4.

Coplay Garden Club will next meet 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at St. John Lutheran Church, 18 S. Third St.

Tip of the month: “Relax and enjoy consuming the vegetables you raised over the growing season.”

American Club of Coplay will hold its annual adult picnic Sept. 7 at the pavilion, 300 Cherry St. There will be a deejay performing 2-5 p.m., and the Castaways Band takes the stage 6-9 p.m. Refreshments will be available noon-9 p.m., and food will be served 1-6 p.m.

You must be 18 years old or older to attend. Tickets are available at the club or hoagie shop.

Coplay aerobics is planning a memorial class to honor the late Donna DeLucia, set for 8:45-9:45 a.m. Sept. 21. DeLucia was the instructor for more than 25 years. She died in 2022 to cancer.

All money raised that day will be donated to the cancer society in her memory. Join other participants to honor DeLucia and help the fight against cancer.

Paul Boyle, public works director, reminds residents garbage cans in excess of 30 gallons will not be collected.

If you have large items, call the borough office at 610-262-6088 to schedule pickups of items such as sofas, plastic-encased mattresses, chairs, dressers, etc. There is a limit of two per year at no charge.

Coplay Food Bank, located in the lower level of the municipal building, 98 S. Fourth St., is open 8:30-10 a.m. the second Tuesday of every month.

If unable to attend the scheduled Tuesday morning time frame, call Jodi at 610-262-0928 to make other arrangements.

The food bank needs coffee, spaghetti sauce and noodles, canned pasta, rice pouches and non-sweetened dry cereals. Monetary donations are always accepted.

If you have a desire to serve Coplay and surrounding communities, consider joining the Coplay Fire Company. They are seeking volunteer firefighters and volunteer fire police.

If your child or grandchild is a resident of Coplay, has graduated from high school in 2024 and is planning to attend college, university, trade school or the police academy, consider applying for a Coplay Scholarship Fund scholarship.

Explorer Post 101’s mission is to promote interest in model railroading to 12-21 year olds. Meetings are held 7-9 p.m. every Thursday on the second floor of the municipal building.

Looking for an inexpensive but great workout? Aerobic exercise is held 8:45 a.m. Saturdays and 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in the auditorium of borough hall.

Bring dumbbells, a towel and a mat to enhance your workout. There is a small cost.
