Allentown Band brings Broadway to Waldheim

The Allentown Band presents “Broadway and Beyond,” a collection of works spanning Broadway and opera favorites with returning guest vocalist mezzo soprano Patricia Risley, 7 p.m. Aug. 13, Waldheim Park, Allentown.

The concert opens with “The Star Spangled Banner” followed by Warren Barker’s arrangement, “Symphonic Gershwin.” The work cleverly presents three of Gershwin’s major hits, including the 1928 symphonic poem, “An American in Paris” (perfect to celebrate the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris), “Cuban Overture” composed in 1932 after a two-week vacation in Havana, and the popular 1924 “Rhapsody in Blue,” tastefully melding classical music with jazz.

Mezzo-soprano Patricia Risley joins the band for two additional Gershwin tunes, “Embraceable You,” composed in 1928 originally for the operetta, “East is West,” and eventually performed in the 1930 Broadway musical, “Girl Crazy,” and “’S Wonderful,” from the 1927 Broadway musical, “Funny Face.”

Meredith Wilson’s “76 Trombones” from the musical, “The Music Man” follows.

The concert continues with two selections from French composer Georges Bizet’s fiery opera “Carmen,” first the instrumental work, “March of the Toreadors,” followed by Risley’s vocals in the seductive “Habañera.” Premiering in 1875 Paris, the opera was a dismal failure given the scandalous content. Several years later, it became one of the most popular operas throughout Europe.

Returning to music of the Broadway stage are two Barker arrangements. “Jerome Robbin’s Broadway” provides the familiar songs, “Comedy Tonight,” “Somewhere,” “New York, New York,” Sunrise, Sunset” and “America.” “The Magic of Andrew Lloyd Webber” includes popular selections “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” and “Phantom of the Opera.”

The award-winning Barbra Streisand initially worked as a cabaret singer and has mastered nearly every entertainment medium available. Risley will regale the Waldheim audience with Ken Moyer’s arrangement of “Singularly Streisand,” singing “People,” “The Way We Were,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “Somewhere” followed by the 1926 Gershwin tune, “Someone to Watch Over Me.”

The concert closes with John Higgins’ arrangement, “Irving Berlin Showstoppers,” featuring popular hits, “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “Shaking the Blues Away,” “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” followed by John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
