Township crash claims life of 17-year-old

School district issues statement of support, but connection remains unclear

A 17-year-old male from Lower Macungie Township was killed Aug. 5 in a vehicle crash in Whitehall Township.

According to Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio, Javian Alexander Rivera died at the scene of the crash in the 2000 block of Orchard Drive.

The crash took place just before midnight. Javian was a passenger in the vehicle, which rolled over. He was ejected, Buglio said.

An autopsy will be completed Aug. 8 to determine the cause of death, according to the report.

Whitehall-Coplay School District released a statement to its community Aug. 6 concerning the event.

It stated, “Last night (Aug. 5), a traffic accident occurred in Whitehall Township involving current and former members of our school community. Anytime there is a tragedy in our community, our students, staff and families will have various needs and require different support and assistance. The district is here to help.

“Our school administrators, counselors and school psychologists are available at the high school daily and are here to support anyone who needs help.

“If you would like additional information or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the high school administration, counselors or school psychologists at 610-437-5081.”

As of press time, the connection between the crash and the school district remained unclear.

When contacted by staff, WCSD Superintendent Dr. Robert Steckel said he was not able to provide additional details.

“The district is here to support anyone who needs it,” Steckel said.

In addition to the coroner’s office, Whitehall Township Police Department, Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office and the Lehigh County Crash Reconstruction Team are investigating.
