Retired police sergeant Jay Ruff presents gift

Alburtis Borough Council met July 31 in borough hall to discuss several key community issues.

There were no public comments discussed.

The seven-member council, led by President Ron DeIaco, reviewed and approved bills for payment and heard reports from Mayor Kathleen Palmer, the treasurer and the fiscal consultant.

In a special moment, Palmer turned her report over to Jay Ruff, a retired veteran of the Alburtis Police Department. He gifted an electric bike and gave a thank you to the current Chief of Police Tony Alsleben. The retired officer served the borough for over four decades and is a cherished member of the borough.

In the first item of administration, Chuck Deprill sent in a request for signage and route approval for the community event “Corey and Kimberly’s Ride,” which was well-received and approved by council.

Deprill said he was able to raise over $20,000 at last year’s event. This year’s ride will take place Oct. 5, with a rain date of Oct. 6.

Following this, a request for a handicapped parking space at 133 W. Second St. was approved.

The next significant item on the agenda was Ordinance No. 587, which was approved, granting full-time nonuniformed employees, excluding the borough manager, five days of vacation time after six months of service.

Solicitor David Knerr, Esquire led a discussion on the borough’s garbage contract, exploring potential changes and improvements to enhance service. Council is awaiting further information before engaging in any new contracts or changes.

Next, council members reviewed the Lower Macungie Fire Department’s second-quarter statistics and deliberated on the last allocation of the American Rescue Plan Act funds. Although, no decisions were made, the ARPA fund stands at $25,382.98. ARPA funds must be spent by Dec. 31, 2026.

At the closing of the meeting, council member Hector Moss called for an executive session; however, no decisions were made during that meeting.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Meetings are held on the second and last Wednesday of each month 7 p.m. at Alburtis Borough Hall, 260 Franklin St.
