Fire company asks for ordinance reversal

Residents voiced their concerns for sidewalk issues on Church Street at the Aug. 5 Macungie Borough Council meeting. There are ongoing issues over contractors’ timing, procedures, techniques and costs.

With impending street repairs, underground utilities need to be addressed and UGI will need to dig into the street to replace pipes. There are issues with timing which can conflict with the completion of the project. The agreement with the grant was to complete this project by September 2026. Filing for an extension will be considered.

The Hickory Street bridge completion is still on target for next year.

The Lower Macungie Fire Department gave its second quarter report. There were 20 calls within Macungie Borough. Further details about their quarterly report can be found on the lowermac.com website.

A resident from Stone Hill Meadows spoke about the conditions within that development. Calls are not being returned by the developer.

A new Macungie Institute coordinator has been hired. Vickie Kocher will begin her new position Aug. 8.

Crosswalks with LED borders will be placed along Route 100 at four intersections: Race and Main, Lea and Main, Poplar and Main and Pine and Main streets. The project has been submitted for bidding.

The Vector vacuum truck has been purchased. Additional tools were needed for $2,386. This was approved.

The Macungie Volunteer Fire Department inquired about reversing the vetoed Ordinance 2024-02 for the zoning map amendment. This is not being considered at this time by council.

The fire department had a large presence at the council meeting, left and held a meeting outside.

The next meeting will be held 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Macungie Institute, 510 E. Main St., Macungie.
