Special to The Press
The Allentown Band presents “Americana,” an all-American collection of works, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4, West Park, Allentown.
The inclement weather location is Lehigh Valley Active Life, 1633 Elm St., Allentown.
The concert is free and open to the public. No ticket is required.
The concert opens with “The Star Spangled Banner” followed by “The Hounds of Spring” by composer Alfred Reed.
Reed’s 1980 overture for concert band was inspired by the poem, “Atalanta in Calydon,” an 1865 recreation of an ancient Greek tragedy. Reed describes the work as presenting “young love in springtime, capturing high-spirited youthful jauntiness and the innocence of tender love.”
“Old Home Days, Suite for Band” arranged by Jonathan Elkus is based on music of composer Charles Ives.
Elkus, a former Lehigh University Professor of Music and conductor of Lehigh Bands, assembled songs and sketches which reflect Ives’ lifelong love of familiar tunes. The work comprises five movements: “Waltz,” “The Opera House and Old Home Day,” “The Collection,” “Slow March” and “London Bridge is Fallen!”
John Philip Sousa greatly admired, adapted and regularly programmed the music of Australian composer Percy Grainger.
The Allentown Band performs the Loras Schissel and Keith Brion arrangement of Sousa’s “Country Gardens,” a beautifully-orchestrated selection containing light and delicate passages featuring flutes, piccolo, muted trumpets and elegant percussion.
The concert continues with “Selections from the Lion King” arranged by Calvin Custer.
Says Allentown Band Conductor Ronald Demkee, “We programmed this to recognize the 30th anniversary of the film, which debuted in 1994. It’s a fun arrangement.”
Instrumental arrangements of songs include: “This Land,” “Circle of Life,” “To Die For,” “Be Prepared,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” “Hakuna Matata” and “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King.”
“Symphonic Gershwin,” arranged by well-known band composer-arranger Warren Barker, combines the most memorable themes from Gershwin’s great symphonic works: “An American in Paris,” “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Cuban Overture.”
Interspersed throughout the program are several lesser-known Sousa marches, including “Pride of the Wolverines,” “Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company,” “Imperial Edward,” “Kansas Wildcats” and “Beau Ideal.”
The concert closes with a Warren Barker arrangement, “Jerome Robbins’ Broadway,” featuring instrumentals of “Comedy Tonight,” “Somewhere,” “New York, New York,” “Sunrise, Sunset” and “America,” followed by Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
