In an effort to provide additional help for student mental health concerns, Parkland School Board directors approved the addition of a St. Luke’s therapy intern in the schools.
The St. Luke’s YESS program, already in effect, offers weekly psychotherapy sessions with licensed clinicians to help students overcome emotional, behavioral or social issues.
The action taken at the June meeting allows St. Luke’s psychotherapists to engage student interns to participate in clinical experiences and training.
At the June committee meeting, Dr. Matthew Carlson, director of student services, noted there are currently two open school psychologist positions in the district, making caseloads higher than usual.
He presented an independent contractor agreement for obtaining certified school psychologists to provide support for students.
The board agreed to authorize as independent contractor, Kelsey Schultz, to provide school psychology services as needed.
In another matter, the board approved a bid of $15,312 for nurses’ supplies in the 2024-25 term.
The board also approved the following cafeteria prices for the new school year: elementary lunch, $2.70; secondary lunch, $2.95; adult lunch, $4.25; adult breakfast, $3.00; and elementary and secondary breakfast, free.
In another item, the board authorized payment of $18,925 for renewal of dues in the Pennsylvania School Boards Association for 2024-25.
Board member Lisa Roth had a surprise announcement of her resignation from the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 Board of Directors.
However, she will remain involved in the work that goes on there.
“It’s such a wonderful place, I want to be there more,” Roth said. “I am seeking a way for certification to be in the classrooms.”
Annette Wilcox was chosen to serve the remainder of Roth’s term through June 30, 2025.
