A small group of Slovenians braved brutal heat and humidity June 21 to raise the Slovenian flag at Payrow Plaza in honor of the 28th anniversary of Slovenian independence.
The abbreviated event was sponsored by the Bethlehem Murska Sobota Sister City Association, with recording secretary Debi Rice acting as emcee.
Angie Stein, director of mayor’s initiatives, welcomed attendees who included Consul General of Slovenia Alenka Jerak. Jerak, who also raised the Slovenian flag, complimented local participants for their continuing dedication to the annual event.
Alex Gergar provided accordion music, and Betty Sylva sang both the Slovenian and American national anthems.
In his invocation, Pastor Jack Steltzer of Blessed Trinity Lutheran Church called for “strength, resilience and harmony.”
A luncheon reception followed at Saucon Valley Acres.
