LeRoy B. Gerchman, M.D., Ph.D. Medical staffer; family physician

LeRoy B. Gerchman, M.D., Ph.D., 83, of Allentown, died July 20, 2024. Born in Forest City, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Joseph and Pauline (Stephanic) Gerchman. He was the husband of Vincenza “Vinny” M. (Acacia) Gerchman for 59 years.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Scranton in 1963; a Master of Science degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, in 1965; a Doctorate of Philosophy degree from Michigan State University, Lansing, Michigan in 1968 and a Medical Doctorate degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Lansing, Michigan. He was elected to Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi Honor Societies.

He interned at the former Allentown General Hospital from 1972-1973, and an Associate Professorship at Michigan State University Colleges of Human and Veterinary Medicine. He was a West End Medical Group family physician from 1973 until he retired in January, 2015. He was a medical staff member at Lehigh Valley Hospital since 1975 and at Sacred Heart Hospital since 1973.

He was a member of St. Thomas More Church, Salisbury Township.

He was a diplomat of The American Board of Family Practice since 1977, and was recertified every seven years since 1977. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians since 1987. He received a Certificate of Merit from the Lehigh County Medical Society for 25 years of service. He was an honoree of Lehigh Valley Hospital for 25 consecutive years of service in March, 2001. He was a member of the Lehigh County and the Pennsylvania Medical Societies since 1972. He was the author of many scientific publications and presentations.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Glenn and his wife Robin (Weber) of Clermont, Florida, and Eric and his wife Denyell (Reifinger) of Denmark, Maine; two daughters, Donna Reiss of Allentown and Wendy and her husband Scott Stephan of Macungie; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
