LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Rain dampens July 4 activities, but police still busy

Showers seem to have had a calming effect for the Fourth of July in Salisbury Township.

Even so, the Salisbury Township Police Department was kept busy.

According to the July 4 holiday weekend report prepared by Salisbury Township Chief of Police Donald Sabo and presented by Salisbury Township Lt. Christopher Casey at the board of commissioners July 11 meeting, there were 134 calls for police service.

“The rain seemed to calm the township down on the Fourth [of July] in the evening hours,” Sabo stated in the report.

Six persons were taken into custody and transported to Lehigh County Prison.

The DUI “Rover Grant” resulted in one DUI arrest, a pursuit and subsequent crash that involved four parked cars. The offender was charged and placed in Lehigh County Prison.

There were 17 complaints about fireworks, 10 loud music-noise complaints, nine fights-assaults-disturbances and five motor vehicle crashes.

“Many phone calls and posts about fireworks were posted after the weekend. Officers did pick up some debris from roadways and spoke with several residents,” Sabo stated.

“All in all, it was a relatively safe and enjoyable weekend for most residents,” Sabo stated in his report.

In other business at the July 11 meeting, commissioners voted 4-0 to approve:

- A motion accepting a time extension to Sept. 21 for a major subdivision project, 621 E. Lynnwood St.

The subdivision project submitted by Thomas P. Williams Jr. proposes to subdivide one lot into seven lots for the development of six twin dwellings and one single-family detached dwelling.

The property in the R4, Medium Density Residential zoning district was last utilized as a greenhouse.

- A motion accepting the audited financials for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2023.

Christopher W. Betley, Shareholder, Buckno Lisicky & Company, reviewed the audit at the July 11 meeting.

“We focus our assessment on the most risky areas,” Betley told commissioners.

“Your internal controls are good. We didn’t find any deficiencies,” Betley said.

A copy of the audit financial report can be read on the township finance department page on the township website: https://salisburylehighpa.gov/.

It was announced the township Volunteer Recognition Dinner will be held 6 p.m. Oct. 17 in the municipal building.

Salisbury Township Police Department is hosting “National Night Out,” 6-8 p.m. Aug. 6 at Salisbury Elementary School. Information about the event, participation and donations is on the township website.
