Garden paradise hidden in the hills

More than 20 years ago, Judy Huff and her father took a drive north of Fogelsville, trying to find a specific property.

When they found it, they wondered about water, electricity and what exactly was so special about the lot.

They walked through the trees until they reached the edge of a corn field and saw a breathtaking view of the rolling hills of Weisenberg Township.

“My husband and I cut down 35 trees,” Huff said. “We used the wood from the trees for my window trim and my door trim.

I have a post beam home.”

She and her husband designed and had their home built.

The project took a year and a half, and they had enough wood from the trees for hardwood flooring throughout the house.

“We ended up making gardens, and I guess I got a little carried away,” Huff said, laughing.

She learned the love of gardening from her mother.

“I used to be in the garden club with her years and years ago,” Huff said. “And then I got away from it because my mother passed away.”

Huff credits her mother for her love of flowers.

She has spent a lot of time designing her backyard garden.

“It’s been ... let’s try this ... and this looks good,” Huff said. “Oh, let me put this ... So, I try different things,” Huff explained pointing to different bushes in bloom.

Huff has no favorite flower or bush.

She does love vibrant colors, and seeing different types of flowers bloom on different months is something she cherishes.

She pointed to different parts of her garden.

“I have flowers blooming from March to October,” Huff said.

“I have a lot of tulips and daffodils. I have my prim roses. I have a lot of things.”

Being part of the Parkland Garden Club’s Silver Anniversary tour on July 13 made sense for Huff.

“We’ve been doing the tour for years,” she said. “I love being part of the tour.

“I love getting ideas, and seeing how people do things.

“It’s a lot of work but it’s an instant gratification when you do it,” Huff said, looking at the visitors admiring her flowers.
