Curtain Rises: Pines postpones; stays at hotel

The Pines Dinner Theatre of Allentown has postponed opening at its new venue and will continue at a Breingsville hotel.

Pines presents “Under The Boardwalk,” July 12 - Aug. 17, Delta by Marriott, Breinigsville.

Pines was to open “Footloose the Musical,” June 1, at the theater’s new location, the former Pistachio Bar & Grille, Shops at Cedar Point, 315 S. Cedar Crest Boulevard, Allentown.

However, renovations at the new site are taking longer than anticipated, so “Footloose” was canceled, according to Pines co-owner Oliver Blatt.

Pines anticipates opening at its new location with “Aways ... Patsy Cline,” Sept. 20 - Oct. 26, and continuing with “White Christmas,” Nov. 8 - Dec. 29.

Blatt says the new venue will include a kitchen and state-of-the-art stage.

The dinner theater, 448 N. 17th St., Allentown, closed after 14 years when the lease was not renewed in 2023.

“Under the Boardwalk,” written by Blatt, was first performed in 2021.

In the musical, Cindy (Eileen Deisemann), Betty Jean (Amber Blatt), Rhonda (Stacy Bechtel) and Melissa (Stacey Yoder) reunite as friends and as a singing group for the first time in years to perform at the Tiki Terrace Lounge at the Outrigger Resort Motel.

It’s the first time they’ll actually sing together in public, and they discover that things that originally drove them apart are the things that pull them together.

The show features the four-part harmonies for some of the greatest hits from the 1950s and 1960s.

“Under the Boardwalk” is directed by Blatt and Yoder, with choreography by Amber Blatt, and music direction and orchestrations by Bechtel.

Tickets include the show and a buffet dinner provided by Delta by Marriott.

Bethlehem writer and playwright Barry Knoblach premieres his musical, “Ocean Avenue: An Emo/Pop-Punk Musical,” July 13 and 14, Charles A. Brown Ice House, as part of the “Ice House Tonight” series.

The jukebox musical features the songs of My Chemical Romance, Yellowcard, Blink-182 and Fall Out Boy.

The songs are performed by Lehigh Valley band We’re From Antarctica.

Formed in 2019 by guitarist-vocalist Carlos “Paco” Brown and drummer Christopher Rauch, the band’s lineup includes bassist MacKenzie Kressley, lead guitarist Jonathan Blanco, and keyboardist-vocalist Jessie Rae.

In the musical, it’s the summer of 2005 and best friends, Corey (Anthony Rizzuto) and Nick (Marquett Ferrell) and their band, Ocean Avenue, will try anything to make it big and finally get out of Asbury Park, N.J.

Their dream is to win the Stone Pony “Battle of the Bands” and get a record deal. With the help of Neil (John Capocasale), an old rocker with a mysterious past, they will take on The Grooms, their hated rivals, who are led by their arrogant lead singer, Hunter (Andrew Galindez).

The cast includes Katy Hartzell, Katherine Semon, Alessandra Fanelli, Ronnie Nase and P. David Hughes. Veronica Bocian directs.

New Bethany Ministries will collect new, unopened items before each performance. Needed are men’s socks, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and canned ravioli. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit New Bethany.
