Catty Connie Mack back in playoffs

Catasauqua’s Connie Mack team is back in the postseason, and they plan to a make the most of their stay.

The Roughies will begin this week with a 7-7-1 record, and will have two key showdowns this week to end the regular season.

For the Roughies, it has been about pitching.

“Over the last three or four weeks, our pitching has improved,” said Roughies manager Dan Lopez. “We’re getting quality starts every outing now and that’s something we weren’t seeing in the first month of the season.”

Lopez pointed to Alex Bolmer, who has been at the top of the team’s rotation, along with Luis Collazo, who has had his share of starts.

Collazo recently got the start in a 6-0 loss to Lehighton, who was in fourth place at the time. He threw 4 2/3 innings and gave up two earned runs before Bolmer came on in relief for the final 2 1/3 innings. The Roughies picked up a forfeit over Freemansburg due to having a lack of players.

“They both pitched very well and kept us in the game,” added Lopez about the Lehighton game “We didn’t hit the ball at all.”

Offensively, Joey Conway leads the team with a .345 average and has 10 hits, six RBIs, and seven runs. Asael Gonzles is hitting. 333 with 13 hits and six RBIs and nine runs. Gavin Hacker is at . 321 with nine hits, eight RBIs, and 10 hits. Evan Reed is hitting .318 with seven hits and nine RBIs.

Overall, the team is hitting .259.

On the mound, Bolmer has thrown 36.1 innings with 23 strikeouts and a 2.50 ERA, and Collazo has 18.2 innings with 15 strikeouts and a 3.37 ERA. Others who have pitched are Conway, Hacker, Reece Lopez, and Trevor Hartzell.

Lopez is confident his team can make a postseason run. The Roughies will travel to East Stroudsburg Monday and host Palmerton.

“We are in the playoffs as of right now,” said Lopez. “We have two game this week, and it is a very important week. If we can get two wins, it really puts us in a good position for a playoff run.”
