Goodwin Scholarship Fund, a local African American historical organization, awarded two $1,000 scholarships to a Freedom HS and Liberty HS graduate of African American heritage. Gonzalez will attend Binghamton University, Vestal, N.Y, and Powell will attend Howard University, Washington, D.C. The J.F. Goodwin Scholarship Fund was founded in 1935 by Dr. J.F. Goodwin, a young black physician who saw a great need in the black community of Bethlehem to help young people continue their educations beyond high school to equip them to meet the challenges of life. When James Goodwin went to Howard University, he found that he did not have enough money to continue. It took him 10 years to complete his education.
