Gallery View: Bethlehem House Gallery closes doors on downtown Main Street
The June 1 closing reception for “Spring Show” proved to be bittersweet for Bethlehem House Gallery Director and Curator Ward Van Haute and the featured artists Giorgio C-Kryiakos, Shawn Campbell, Jay Echevarria, Mandy Martin, Bennett Rambo and Charles Stonewall. Bethlehem House Gallery, 459 Main St., Bethlehem.
After nearly 10 years in a historic former bank building, Bethlehem House Gallery, 459 Main St., Bethlehem, has closed.
Among works by the featured artists were several pieces by Van Haute, including “Red-Headed Meadow Katydid” (2020; oils on reverse of glass panel, 17 in. x 25 in. x 3 in.) grouped with three works featuring insects as subjects.
A self-taught painter, sculptor and glass fusion artist, Van Haute received a BA in film and television production from DeSales University in 2001. He worked as a set decorator and props master in the film and theater business in Philadelphia and New York for 15 years prior to opening Bethlehem House Gallery.
“We brought that experience into this business where we exhibit art from local and regional artists. I curate each show and decorate it as though you’re viewing the art in somebody’s home,” says Van Haute.
Van Haute, born in 1978 in Ft. Belvoir, Va., met his wife, Rebecca, soon after attending DeSales. He fell in love with her and her hometown of Bethlehem. They reside in Upper Bucks County with their five children. Van Haute still has an art studio in Bethlehem.
Van Haute credits his wife for inspiring him to open the gallery, as well as for its business model, and is grateful to her family for providing financial and moral support for the venture.
“After 10 years, I have expanded my audience. At this point, I can move into my studio space and run the business the same way from there,” Van Haute says.
“I accomplished what I needed to accomplish on Main Street,” says Van Haute.
Van Haute plans to focus on his own art.
He expressed gratitude for Bethlehem House Gallery Assistant Director and Gallery Manager Rachel Bell, gallery staff, exhibiting artists and gallery patrons.
