NV beats Emmaus, Lower Macungie

After back-to-back losses to South Parkland and North Parkland, the Northern Valley Legion baseball team has bounced back to pick up consecutive wins, downing Emmaus 6-1 and then beating Lower Macungie 11-0.

The wins have the Chargers at 4-3 on the season and in second place in the Lehigh Valley Legion standings, just 2 1/2 games behind South Parkland (6-0).

In Monday night’s win over Lower Macungie (3-4), Northern Valley collected just five hits in the game but drew 12 walks, scoring all of its runs in the first three innings.

Trey Sterling had two hits, scored two runs and drove in a run. Shaun O’Donnell drove in two runs and scored twice.

O’Donnell started the game for Northern Valley and gave up a leadoff triple in the first before coming back to get the next three batters and strand the runner on third.

Northern Valley’s first three hitters reached on a single and two walks to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first. A walk to Justin Augustus pushed across one run and a wild pitch brought in another. Max George grounded to second for the second out of the inning, but the play allowed O’Donnell to score from third for a 3-0 lead.

O’Donnell worked around a second-inning error and Northern Valley came to the plate in the bottom of the second looking for more runs.

A hit batter and two more walks again allowed Northern Valley to open the inning with bases loaded before there was an out recorded. A walk to O’Donnell made it 4-0 and Josh Lichman singled to center to stretch the lead to 5-0 with the bases still loaded and just one out, but Lower Macungie worked out of the jam with no further damage.

The bottom of the third opened with Noah Hogan pitching for Lower Macungie and striking out the first two batters of the inning.

The next three batters all walked and Sterling delivered a single to bring in one run and O’Donnell’s double to make it 9-0 before an error brought in the fifth run of the inning for Northern Valley. Another bases-loaded walk to George made it 11-0.

O’Donnell threw all five innings and recorded six strikeouts.

Northern Valley hosts Whitehall (2-1) before a few days off and a showdown with South Parkland, the only undefeated team in the Lehigh Valley Legion on Tuesday.
