Lower Macungie’s Ohl, McGeehan shut down Buffs
Lower Macungie continues to look for a way back to where it was at the start of the Lehigh Valley Legion season when it opened with wins over Northern Valley and Emmaus, outscoring the two teams by a 24-1 margin. Currently, Lower Mac is on a three-game slide and has lost four of its last five games to drop to 3-4.
On Monday, Northern Valley (4-3) got a little revenge for the loss that they suffered in the season opener against Lower Macungie. The Chargers put together an 11-0 win thanks to a six-run third inning. The Mustangs were held to just two hits and two walks in the loss.
The last win for LM was against North Parkland when Colin Wilson doubled and singled twice to pace a 13-6 win over the Buffaloes. Wilson’s third inning double brought in a run and Zach Ehritz later singled in the inning to drive in a run and make it a 5-0 lead after three innings. In addition to his three hits, Wilson scored twice and drove in two runs.
Emmit Budick picked up two hits in the game and scored twice.
In the bottom of the second, the first three batters of the inning reached base for Lower Macungie to load the bases. With one out, Dan Rohlsen and Shane Ohl drew walks to force in runs for a 2-0 lead.
An inning later with Sohen Schadler and Budick on base, Wilson delivered a double to score Schadler. A dropped third strike allowed Budick to race home for a 4-0 advantage before Ehritz’ single made it 5-0.
North Parkland got two runs back in the fourth, but Lower Macungie’s patience at the plate continued to pay off in the bottom of the inning. The Mustangs drew 12 walks in the game and Mike Kernechel and Wiley Fleck drew two of them to open the inning before a balk moved both runners up a base.
Schadler walked to load the bags before Wilson singled to bring in one run and Dayne Schmidt drew another walk with the bases loaded to make it 7-2.
The Buffaloes made a game of it in the top of the sixth when they put four runs on the board, but Lower Macungie dashed comeback hopes when they plated six runs in the bottom of the inning.
Budick and Drew McGeehan came up with back-to-back doubles to make it 8-6. With one out and runners on first and third, Jack Sparango and Grayson Galligani walked to load the bases and two more walks pushed across two easy runs for Macungie. Kernechel delivered a big blow with a bases-clearing double to go up 13-6.
McGeehan retired North Parkland in order in the top of the seventh to lock up the win for Ohl, who started the game and pitched five innings, giving up just two hits and striking out seven batters.
Lower Macungie has home games against Emmaus (0-7) and South Parkland (6-0) this week and will face North Parkland (3-3) and Whitehall (2-1) to start next week.
