Hornets go 2-2 in Bash at the Beach

The Emmaus High School boys basketball team took a break from summer league play to compete in the Bash at the Beach, played at Whitehall High School last Thursday through Sunday.

The Hornets went 2-2 in the event, splitting winning their first and third games and losing the second and fourth. It was also the first big tournament for first-year head coach Jerald Brown.

“I thought the weekend went really well,” said Brown. “The guys really played hard and listened well to our coaching. I’m proud of their efforts and happy they were able to win some games.”

Emmaus defeated fellow Eastern Pennsylvania Conference opponent, Dieruff, 42-33 on opening night on Thursday night behind a team-high 16 points by Jack Csensits. Owen Haffner added 11 rebounds.

Two days later on Saturday morning, the Hornets suffered their first loss of the tournament, falling by just two points, 47-45, to eventual runner-up Berks Catholic. Csensits finished with a game-high 13 points and both Matt Deschenes and Haffner tallied 12 points. Emmaus then played later that night against another conference foe in Easton, beating the Red Rovers 54-40 in an elimination game to advance to championship Sunday. But the tournament run ended there as the Hornets were downed by Whitehall 50-46. Csensits recorded a game and team-best 27 points and nine rebounds.

“Jack had a great tournament for us,” Brown said. “He showed his leadership and his talent. The guys really played well as a team with a lot of new faces, including myself.”

Emmaus, which is 1-6 overall in the LV Summer League, will be back in action this week as it faced Notre Dame Green Pond Tuesday before taking on second-place Wilson West Lawn on Thursday.
