Falcons beat Warren Hills, take division lead

The Salisbury High School boys basketball team climbed up the ladder to the top of the standings of the Small School Division in the Lehigh Valley Summer League this past week as the Falcons went unbeaten, winning both of their games at Whitehall High School.

The first game, last Tuesday, June 11, was the one that put them in first place as the Falcons took down previously undefeated Warren Hills by double digits, 40-26. The Falcons followed that two nights later by defeating Lehigh Valley Academy 37-21 for their fifth consecutive victory.

“The guys have been playing well of late,” said Salisbury head coach Jason Weaver. “It took them a game to get going and get acclimated with each other. That’s what the summer is for. It’s a lot of new guys playing together and playing varsity level competition.”

In the win over the Blue Streaks, Bryan Gonzalez led the way offensively with a game-high 14 points. In the victory against the Jaguars, Drew Petrie finished with a team and game-high 11 points to pace the Falcons to the win.

“Those two guys have been two of our leaders and are playing really well this summer,” Weaver said. “We are a young team with only two seniors returning. We are playing great team basketball, however. Bryan, Drew and Steven Lozada are playing well offensively and shooting the ball well. There are many possessions where everyone is touching the ball. Keaton Frye has also been playing great interior defense. We’ve just got to keep getting better at rebounding and reducing turnovers.”

Salisbury is now 5-1 and in sole possession of first place in the Small School Division. The Falcons had a bye in the LV summer league this past Tuesday night and are be set to compete in the first major tournament of the summer this weekend, the Bash at the Beach, played at Whitehall this weekend.

They will be competing in a six-team, double elimination tournament and open with Panther Valley Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner will take on Holy Cross on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Action in the summer league will resume next Tuesday when Salisbury takes on Lehighton.
