Valley wins Cup title
Lehigh Valley’s quest for a Carpenter Cup softball championship came to fruition last week when Lehigh Valley won its final against Delaware South, 2-1, and became 2024 champs of the Philadelphia Phillies-sponsored tournament on June 19 at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
Lila Padden’s (Southern Lehigh) 2 RBIs in the first inning were Lehigh Valley’s only runs, scored by Rylee McGinley (Northwestern Lehigh) and Addison Sabo (Liberty), in the tournament final.
Delaware South was held scoreless until the seventh inning but could not overcome Lehigh Valley’s one-run lead.
Karlye Toman (Palisades) pitched the first three innings for Lehigh Valley, and Addy Smith (Liberty) pitched the last four.
McGinley and Alina Weaver (Nazareth) had two hits apiece, and Shauna McNamee (Nazareth), Natalie Chloros (Nazareth), and Abigail Derr (Emmaus) had one hit each.
Lehigh Valley, coached by Brian Fehnel, will be recognized at the Phillies-Miami Marlins game on Aug. 14 at Citizens Bank Park.
Lehigh Valley eked out a 6-5 win over Berks L-L in their semifinal, also on June 19.
Berks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Lehigh Valley answered with five runs in the fourth inning.
Allison Hunsberger (Parkland) had a double and 3 RBI in the semifinal win.
Lehigh Valley toppled last year’s champion, Tri-Cape, in their June 19 quarterfinal, 8-3, when Teman tripled and had 2 RBI.
Lehigh Valley’s only loss was to Delaware County, 5-3, their third game on June 18.
Lehigh Valley opened the tournament with a 10-1 win over Philadelphia Catholic, followed by a 5-3 victory over Delaware North.
Lehigh Valley’s roster also included Sadie Haefeli (Emmaus), Hannah Duerr (Northampton), Emma Freeman (Northwestern Lehigh), and Audrey Rinda (Easton).
