After a slow start, Moore Township’s Connie Mack RedHawks are back in the hunt.
After their convincing 12-2 victory over Northwest recently, the RedHawks won their fourth-straight and raised their record to 5-2 at the time of this story.
In the win, Chase Werkheiser had two hits and two RBIs, Connor Muth had two RBIs, Noah Kline had three hits, and Charles Burrell had two hits. Brandon McEntire struck out six over three innings.
Head coach Mick Sugra has welcomed the transition after his club began the season with a 1-2 start, but he also realizes there are things to work on.
“I like where we are at,” he said. “We can still improve quite a bit in terms of walk-to-strike out ratio. We are putting too many guys on base that stresses the arms, of our pitching staff, the defense, and the coaches, especially when the opposition had the bases loaded at the end of the game in four of six of our games.”
For the season, Aidan Sugra and Jaxon Rutzmoser are both hitting .500, Brayden Giandomenico is at .421, and Werkheiser as at .400. Sugra leads the team in hits (9) and runs scored (7), and Rutzmoser has a team-high eight RBIs.
On the mound, Burrell leads the steam in strikeouts (13), and McEntire had a team-low 0.95 ERA. Cole Schaffer follows close behind McEntire with a 1.61 ERA.
Yet, like the veteran skipper he is, Sugra knows there are plenty of various paths ahead for his club. The RedHawks were scheduled to host the Bombers and Wilson in other recent games. After their victory, the RedHawks found themselves tied for fifth place.
“We are 5-2, and we still have a lot of baseball left to play,” he stressed at the time. “We had five guys who were on vacation [last] week, and it was a test how we responded with 10 guys.”
