Master Gardener presents program on hummingbirds

By LISA MIKITKA

Special to The Press

Forty members attended the Parkland Garden Club’s May 13 meeting on “Hummingbird Hangout” presented by Linc Coffin.

Coffin has been a certified Master Gardener for 12 years and works with the Penn State Extension Office as a Master Gardener Consultant.

He discussed the history of the hummingbirds and the first Spanish Explorers in the Americas.

Coffin said the birds are only found in the North- and South American hemispheres and they migrate north in the spring and south during the winter months.

He said they are tropical birds in origin and he discussed their life expectancy.

Using his jovial nature and humor, he discussed their mating rituals, nesting and territorial behaviors.

Coffin also discussed the types of bird feeders conducive to hummingbirds and the types of nectar rich food and plants used to attract the birds.

He closed by discussing physical traits of different species of hummingbirds, of which there are hundreds.

Master Gardener consultants are available for information by calling the Penn state Extension Office at 610-813-6613.

There were several guest attendees, two of whom joined that evening as new members.

The meeting closed with the monthly raffle and reminder of upcoming Parkland Garden Club events.

The garden club meets monthly on the second Monday of each month at Jordan Lutheran Church, 5103 Snowdrift Road, Orefield.

Guests are welcome to attend. The first visit is free to attend.

New members are always welcome.
