Green Acres Park renamed to honor Frank McCullough Sr.

Scores of friends and neighbors of Frank McCullough Sr. gathered June 22 at 2732 Green Acres Drive to honor the late McCullough’s memory by renaming Green Acres Park to Frank McCullough Sr. Park.

McCullough was a longtime supporter and volunteer worker in Salisbury Township for youth and family recreation activities and facilities.

Mark Wilson, the current chair of the township’s recreation advisory committee, at the park renaming ceremony, recalled how McCullough jumped right into the area’s recreation activities shortly after moving his family to their Andrea Drive home in the early 1970s.

He was a driving force in the Hamilton Park Area’s sports and recreation activities, coaching and bringing new sporting activities to the area’s youth and families, Wilson said.

He was also a hard worker, Wilson said. “I know many of us can still see a very content gentleman riding that tractor to groom the Lindberg Park ball fields in the early afternoon of every home game day.” He once described those activities as “like being in heaven,” Wilson said.

Wilson said it was McCullough’s vision that led to a perimeter trail at Lindberg Park so people “could walk or jog around the park at all times of the year.”

Wilson also recalled it was McCullough who proposed bringing pickleball courts to the township’s parks. “That sport is going to be big, really big,” McCullough predicted more than 10 years ago.

Gennie Baillie, the township’s recreation director, was an emotional participant in the renaming ceremony. “Frank was my mentor for so many years,” Baillie said. “I learned so much from him. Frank loved Green Acres Park. I’m so happy we are honoring him by renaming the park for him.”
