Borough prepares for event

At the Northampton Borough Council meeting June 20, council noted the Northampton Exchange Club is gearing up to host the annual Northampton Community Days festival July 17-20. The event is a perennial success that includes kids’ rides, games, fireworks and a firefighter parade.
The festival also attracts visitors from surrounding communities. Council will have the street department in high gear, preparing the Municipal Park grounds, which also includes the public swimming pool.
In her building, land and recreation committee report, Councilwoman Judy Haldeman noted summer pool passes are still available. They are sold at Northampton Recreation Center, 1 Lerchenmiller Drive. Those ages 65 and older can receive free passes or free daily admission.
Council President Julia Kutzler congratulated the municipal pool staff, noting the pool is clean and already getting a lot of usage. She added the pool is a memory maker for the kids and their families.
Mayor Anthony Pristash also thanked the pool staff, saying activity has increased due to the pool staff and the pool’s outstanding condition. He said years ago, the pool was the neighborhood kids’ recreation center. He noted he and other kids would spend the whole day at the pool.
Council approved ordinance 1231, directing the installation of “no parking here to corner” signs on both sides of Lincoln Avenue at the intersection of Station Alley. The ordinance also directs the installation of a stop sign for southbound traffic on Poplar Street at the intersection of Stark Street and the installation of signage restricting truck traffic to local deliveries only on Howertown Road between East Fourth and East 10th streets and on East Fourth Street between Main Street and Howertown Road.
Resolution 8-24 was approved to adopt the River Central Multi-Municipal Comprehensive Plan.
Council approved ordinance 1232, appointing the borough solicitor for the purpose of collecting unpaid claims and setting interest attorney fees and collection fees assessed for claims on delinquent municipal accounts.

Two accessible parking spots were requested by residents for 1601 Washington Ave. and at 23 W. Fourth St. The residents requesting the spots on West Fourth Street addressed council, explaining their reasons and need for an accessible parking spot.
Northampton Borough Police Department Chief Bryan Kadingo recommended council approve the Washington Avenue request and reject the West Fourth Street request. Council approved both requests.
Part-time police officer Jeremy Kahle resigned his position from the Northampton Borough Police Department effective immediately. Council approved the resignation.
South Whitehall Township received permission to use the borough’s portable band trailer for a free community event, scheduled for 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Sept. 28.
The township is required to pay the rental fee of $300 and a delivery and setup fee of $150 and must provide a certificate of insurance that holds Northampton Borough harmless.
Northampton Exchange Club received permission to use the Canal Street Park pavilion for the group’s annual picnic Sept. 14. All fees were waived.
Council voted to refuse a potential motion to cancel the first council meetings for July and August. Next month’s meeting will be held July 3 because of the Independence Day holiday July 4.
Councilman Kenneth Hall said Atlas Cement Company Memorial Museum received a donation of $2,000 from the Buzzi Unicem USA cement manufacturing company. Hall also said Mason Smolenak, junior councilman, joined the borough office staff as an intern and has already distinguished himself as a valuable addition to the team.
Councilman Jason Donahue noted the fire department’s cadet summer camp will be held 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. July 8-12.
The cost for youth ages 12-15 is $25. Call the fire department to have your children or grandchildren enrolled in the camp.
Donahue also reported the department plans to participate in the Walnutport truck dedication parade June 29.
In the public works and sewer committee report, it was noted Atlas Machine and Welding reported there is “significant damage” to the canopy and front door of the portable band trailer. There is a minimum repair cost of $20,000. The front door has been removed, and those who rent the trailer are made aware of the situation.
