Gallery View: Bethlehem Palette Club 2024 exhibit in Rotunda
Forty works by 32 artists of the Bethlehem Palette Club are in the “2024 Members Juried Exhibit,” with the closing reception and awards ceremony, 1 - 3 p.m. June 30, Rotunda Gallery, City Hall, Bethlehem.
The exhibition, with a variety of subjects and media, was juried for inclusion and awards by Matt DeProspero.
“In selecting the award winners, I chose pieces that I felt conveyed the artist’s boldness with either their ideas, color choices, composition or handling of the materials,” says DeProspero.
DeProspero is an award-winning plein-air oil painter and teacher from Lambertville, N.J.
The top $300 cash prize was awarded to Sandra Corpora for “Monocacy at Burnside” (2024; oil on canvas, 16 in. x 20 in.). The serene snow-covered landscape focuses reflections in the Monocacy Creek with the historic structures of Burnside Plantation and garden wall in the background.
“I redesigned it and looked at it anew,” says Corpora, a Bethlehem-based fine artist, of the work based on a much larger painting of the scene she captured with her paintbrushes 10 years ago.
“Not only did I redesign the motif, I was able to bring some different textures and paint handling to it that I was really happy with. Ostensibly, it is accurate to the subject,” Corpora says.
The original oil that Corpora painted 10 years ago was purchased by an art collector in Texas. A reproduction of it is displayed in Kirkland Village.
Corpora describes her works as “painterly realism.” She seeks “to interpret the energy of her subjects without getting bogged down in exacting details.”
Also chosen to receive cash awards were: Joy Barnes, $250, “Oak Leaf Hydrangea” (oil); Albina P. Herron, $200, “Earth Song in Autumn Colors“ (gouache); Pat Delluva, $150, “Always Room for a Non-Conformist” (charcoal and Conté); Deborah Walkowiak, $100, “Vintage Jug and Apricot” (oil); Barbara C. Tracy, $75, “Early Spring on the Farm” (acrylic), and Janet Dance, $50, “Micro Mica” (oil).
Honorable mentions were awarded to James V. Roth, Jr., “Bank Street, Emmaus, PA” (watercolor), Paul McGinn, “Along the Gallows Run” (oil) and Mary Millan Klunk, “Floral Platter on a Glass Table” (acrylic).
Founded in 1947, the Bethlehem Palette Club works to create an interest in art within the community through outreach and exhibitions.
The Rotunda Exhibition is sponsored by the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission.
