Jodi S. Butters
Jodi S. Butters, 61, of New Tripoli, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family in her home.
Twelve years ago, she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and given a 5 percent chance of surviving five years.
Her grit was surpassed only by her grace, as she aggressively pursued dozens of rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and multiple surgeries without even a whisper of a complaint.
The epitome of strength and courage, her greatest gift to those who knew her was showing everyone how to face extreme adversity with exceptional grace and selflessness.
Serving as a dedicated Army spouse for more than 25 years, she learned to love to travel, always looking forward to taking in nature’s beauty, exploring local shops, and trying new restaurants.
Her highest priority was spending time with family and friends.
Her famous notebook and pen ever nearby to plan out every detail of the next trip.
She took great care to make sure every box was checked, and everyone’s favorite meals or activities were planned.
We think she secretly enjoyed the planning more than the trips, and was especially fond of what she referred to as her “old lady trips” where she would gather with several of her high school girlfriends for mini vacations.
This group of friends took so many of those trips, they came up with a name for their group, calling themselves “Six Old Ladies and a Buick.”
While she took on many roles in her life, there is no doubt her most cherished was that of “Nana” to her sweet granddaughter Willa James.
They enjoyed going to Disney and many other trips, but their most special time was spent simply snuggling under a blanket on Nana’s chair, talking, learning, reading and playing.
Although gone too soon, and deeply missed, her family is left with hearts full of gratitude for all the love she shared so unconditionally and for the invitation to join her on a journey well-traveled.
She is survived by Chad, with whom she celebrated 33 years of marriage on March 2.
Born in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Jewel M. (Phillips) Hiler of Hurt, Va., and the late Cecil C. Shelton, and her loving father figure, the late James D. Hiler.
In addition to her adoring husband and mother, she is survived by her son, Nicholas B. Coleman (Nate) of Pittsburgh; daughter Carly B. (Logan) Snyder of New Tripoli; granddaughter Willa James Snyder; sister Heidi (Lynnwood) Tucker of Midlothian, Va.; brothers Derek (Kathy) Shelton of Hurt, Va., and Van (Janet) Shelton of Patriot, Ohio; niece Ivy; nephews Jake (Lela), Eli and Heath (Jamie), and great-niece, Audrey; and many chosen family and wonderful friends.
There will be a private remembrance gathering at the convenience of the family.
The family is accepting flowers.
Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to the Cancer Support Community of the Greater Lehigh Valley, 944 Marcon Blvd., Suite 110, Allentown, PA 18109.
