Dr. Paul I. Slick Ph.D.

Paul I. Slick, 90, of Emmaus, died June 6, 2024, peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Jane Slick for 68 years. Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Julia Waska and Eugene Slick.

Upon graduating from high school, he attended Syracuse University, receiving both full academic and athletic scholarships. In 1955, he received the honor of “Most Outstanding Student Athlete.” A highlight of his college career was playing in the Orange Bowl. He was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry and a doctorate in physical chemistry.

In 1962 he accepted a job at Bell Laboratories in Allentown and became the supervisor of research in magnetic materials for fiber optic communications. He was a leader in these pioneering efforts and holds a patent in this field. He was part of the team responsible for the patent of the original fiber-optic transatlantic cable system.

He is survived by his wife; children, Michael, of Tyler, Texas, Matthew, of Emmaus, Nancy, of Coopersburg; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren (with an 11th on the way!). He was predeceased by a son, Andrew; eight brothers.

A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. June 21 at the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown. Visitation will be 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Arrangements were made by the Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Homes, Emmaus.
