At the June 11 meeting of Coplay Borough Council, Jarrod Afflerback and Thomas Dunleavy were approved for full-time positions with the Coplay Borough Police Department, pending firearm qualifications.

During the workshop meeting June 4, police Chief Ryan Emerich said these new officers were the top of the police academy’s graduating class.

“They set high marks and were the top two in shooting,” Emerich said at the June 4 meeting. “And their grade averages overall for the entire year were 93% and 95%. I think that kind of speaks to the process that we’ve done and just the rigorous background training that we put them through. For them to have two of the highest scores, that’s pretty darn good. And they’re coming to us, which is good.”

In other business, council President Louis Bodish announced the Hometown Heroes banners have replaced the Saylor Kilns banners. Banners for the Hometown Heroes program are still available for purchase.

The kilns banners are available for pickup and can be claimed at the municipal building, 98 S. Fourth St.

Redeemed Christian Church of God, 5 N. Third St., will host a Praise Arena anniversary event 9 a.m.-5 p.m. June 29. Street closures will occur on Third Street in front of the church and will extend out onto Coplay and Hall streets.

The church is celebrating its 20th anniversary with events spanning June 27-30, including a reception, concert, anniversary service, banquet and a thanksgiving. The theme of the celebration is “Expressions of Supernatural Grace.”

Council next meets 7 p.m. July 2 for the workshop meeting and July 9 for the general business meeting in the basement-level meeting room at the municipal building.
