Emmaus caps 18-win season

The Emmaus High School softball team finished its 2024 regular season in a very successful fashion, winning its final eight games to finish 13-3 in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action while winning the EPC West Division. The Green Hornets also went 18-5 overall.

In the postseason, Emmaus lost in the opening game of the EPC playoffs to eventual runner-up Pleasant Valley, and then dropped a District 11 6A semifinal round game to Liberty, which ended up winning the tournament.

“The season overall went as expected,” said Emmaus head coach Rich Giering after his third season at the helm. “We won the EPC West Division, but we had a letdown during the playoffs. I thought, overall, that the girls really competed and worked hard and were one of the best teams in the conference and district.”

There were a couple of favorite moments and games for Giering in particular that stuck out.

“Abington Heights, the first game of the year, Emma Kozy hit a game-tying, two-run home run,” Giering said. “And Taylor Gitski just missed a home run to win it. That was a really exciting game. Also, beating Spring-Ford was another great win.”

When it came to the senior class, they were a special group to Giering and the program and have brought the team a ton of success. Two of those seniors, Giering singled out his starting short stop and pitcher as special contributors.

“Brianna Amey was overall our team MVP,” said Giering. “She did everything well on the field and was our leader. Autumn Held, who was not at 100% all year, did an outstanding job as well. This senior group meant a lot since this was my third year with them and they kept everyone pretty happy and it is tough to watch them leave.”

Along with Amey and Held, Taylor Bruckler, Kaelynn Burrell, Gitski, Kozy, Cora Li-Moyer, Mildred Thompson and Molly Yard were the other seniors. Their legacies will still carry over with the talented group Giering has coming back and entering varsity.

“We will be pretty young next season, but we have some very talented ninth graders that will be on varsity and a few 10th graders that are talented as well,” Giering said. “The future is definitely bright for the program.”
