Gallery View: It’s a small world, after all, at Snow Goose

“The Art of the Miniature XXXII,” a big exhibition of small art work from around the world, continues through June 15, The Snow Goose Gallery, Bethlehem.

It truly is a small world at the “32nd Invitational Exhibition of Fine Art Miniatures” on the gallery’s second floor with 386 works by 85 artists from the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, England, France, Israel, Romania, Scotland, South Africa and Wales.

“The largest piece cannot go over 64 square inches from the outside of the frame,” says Snow Goose Gallery owner Mary Serfass, adding, “There’s a couple that come close, but nothing that’s over that.”

Included is Serfass’s landscape “Pink Moon” (2023; ink, colored pencil and acrylic on paper, 3 in. x 2.75 in.). “I did it for The Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington, D.C., last November and it won third place in mixed media,” she says. Serfass has other mixed-media works in the show.

“I call it paper solo. It’s my trademark name for this,” says Patsie McCandless about her “Sculpted by Wind,” (2024; layered cut paper and archival glue, 2.25 in. x 4.25 in.). “I just feel like I’m back in Aruba when I look at it,” says McCandless, of Paoli, Chester County, who is a published writer, public speaker and flutist.

Shara Donohue has three works in the exhibit. According to the Barto, Berks County-based artist, her “Strawberries-She Rejoices,” (Date; polymer clay on wood, watercolor, 3 in. x 3 in.) refers to the Persephone myth, “Strawberries being an indicator of the beginning of spring and Demeter [her mother] rejoices.

The other two pieces are acrylics, each 1.5 in. x 1.5 in. depicting a bench by Lake Erie and another a lopsided vase in a handmade gilded frame.

The gallery owner’s son David Evan Serfass curated the exhibit.

Magnifying glasses are provided to better view the intricately- rendered works.
