The Greater Lehigh Valley Writers’ Group (GLVWG) holds its monthly meeting, 10 a.m. - noon June 22, Palmer Branch, Easton Area Public Library, 1 Weller Place, Palmer Township, and online via Zoom.

Author Donna Brennan will present “Openings, Hooks, Transitions, and Endings: What They Are, What They Do, and How to Make Them Better,” 11 a.m.-12 noon June 22.

Brennan is expected to talk about how to begin a story, and how each scene within the story should set up reader expectations and draw them into the tale.

She will talk about different types of openings and how to figure out what works best for a story and readers. There will be tips to help openings better serve story goals. Also discussed will be different type of hooks, as well as where, how and when to use them.

There is no fee for the morning program. Registration is recommended but not required.

Brennan will lead a workshop, “Transitions and Endings,” 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. June 22.

Transitions are more than just getting from one scene to another. They’re also about the changes that happen within scenes and within characters.

Transitions can be jarring or seamless. It depends on what works best in the story or in that part of the story.

Endings should be satisfying. They don’t have to be happy, but they shouldn’t let the reader feel cheated or disappointed.

Also discussed will be what types of endings attendees enjoy, and what they don’t enjoy, to help better understand how different reader expectations can be.

In addition, discussed will be what should be at the beginning of a book blurb, what kinds of hooks can draw readers in, how to briefly summarize the main points of a story, and how most, if not all, book blurbs should end.

The workshop is free for members. There’s a fee for non-members.

Attendees must be 18 years or older.
