At The Movies: Fast and “Furiosa”

There’s a lot of anger going on in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.”

And apparently no anger management classes are available in the dystopian Australia of the future.

A more angry cast of villains has not been seen on the big movie screen since, well, the last “Mad Max” movie, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” released in 2015.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” starred Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. Theron doesn’t appear in “Furiosa.” Younger versions of Furiosa do.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road” and the fifth movie in the “Mad Max” franchise, stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa at a younger age.

The role of Furiosa as a child is played by Alyla Browne.

The casting of Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne is excellent in matching appearances and acting styles.

The casting of Charlee Fraser as the mother of Furiosa is also a believable choice. Each provides a compelling screen presence.

In “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” the young Furiosa is kidnapped from her homeland, The Green Place of Many Mothers.

Furiosa is taken by the Biker Horde, led by the Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), across the Wasteland to the Citadel, ruled by The Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme).

Furiosa teams up with Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke) to seize control of Gastown, an oil refinery controlled by Dementus.

They also attempt to take over Bullet Town, a mining company.

It’s an action movie to the, well, max.

The chase scenes are jaw-dropping and plentiful with customized and jacked-up hot-rod vehicles.

The vehicles in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” don’t disappoint.

There’s the War Rig, a Kenworth 900 semi-tractor trailer oil tanker; a 1962 Plymouth Valiant driven by Furiosa and Jack; a Motorcycle Chariot of three motorcycles lashed together driven by Dementus, and a Mack DM-800 outfitted as a Monster Tow-Truck named Six Foot, with six wheels and a Mack Bulldog hood ornament and rear-view mirror Bulldog embossments, also driven by Dementus.

There are other crazy vehicles, including a circa 1959 double-body Cadillac, 1958 Ford Ranchero, Volkswagen Microbus and circa 1932 Ford Three-window coupe named Cranky Black, driven by Furiosa.

George Miller has directed all five “Mad Max” films, including “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985), “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” (1981) and “Mad Max” (1979).

Miller (five-time Oscar nominee; winner, animated feature film, “Happy Feet,” 2007; director: “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” 2022; “Happy Feet Two,” 2011; “Babe: Pig in the City,” 1998; “Lorenzo’s Oil,” 1992; “The Witches of Eastwick,” 1987) directs “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” with a sense of visceral doom.

The movie is a Hollywood Western meets Science-Fiction.

Every scene is captivating. The action is frequently startling. And a warning to the squeamish: The violence is a often shocking, unrelenting and stomach-churning.

Miller reassembled his team, including: Tom Holkenborg, composer (“Mad Max: Fury Road”); Eliot Knapman, Margaret Sixel (Oscar, editing, “Mad Max: Fury Road”), Colin Gibson (Oscar, production design, “Mad Max: Fury Road”) and Jenny Beavan (Oscar, costume design, “Mad Max: Fury Road”; “Cruella,” 2022).

Cinematographer is Simon Duggan (“Hacksaw Ridge,” 2017; “The Great Gatsby,” 2014).

Miller and Nick Lathouris co-wrote the screenplay for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and “Three Thousand Years of Longing.”

Anya Taylor-Joy (“Dune: Part Two,” 2024; “The Menu,” 2022; “Last Night in Soho,” 2021) is extraordinarily fierce as Furiosa.

Chris Hemsworth (“Thor: Love and Thunder,” 2022; “Avengers: Endgame, 2019; “Avengers: Infinity War,” 2018) is emotionally and physically powerful as Dementus while almost unrecognizable behind a beard and apparent fake nose.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” should appeal to fans of director George Miller, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, the ”Mad Max” franchise and motorheads.
