Boys off to 3-1 start in summer action

Last season, Northampton’s boys’ basketball team had lofty expectations with seven seniors on it roster. Second-year head coach Matt Scholl was coming off a 10-13 campaign in his inaugural run.

Unfortunately, those expectations didn’t reach its fruition.

The Konkrete Kids’ season ended sooner than expected in a 59-52 loss to Stroudsburg in an opening-round Class 6A district playoff game - after the Kids reached the quarterfinals of the East Penn Conference (EPC) tournament. Both teams had 10 days to prepare for the game.

Northampton will lose leading scorers, as well as team leaders, J.J. Kolumber and Tristan Pinnock and five other seniors from a team that produced a 14-10 overall record last season.

This season, the Kids can be in a transition season with riding juniors Noah Walakovits and Brady Simock as the team’s lone returning starters.

However, the Kids’ possible rebuilding season has taken an early upswing in their participation in the Lehigh Valley Summer Basketball League, as they marched out to a 3-1 start. The Kids were 3-0 until they dropped a recent game to Allen.

Yet, Scholl is still taking a cautious approach.

Rising seniors Ronnie Jones and Elijah Mashark, juniors Leo Regec, Logan Walter, Korbin Sollars, Jimmy Everett, sophomore Ethan Raphun, and freshman Jake Raisely all figure to be in the mix.

“After losing seven seniors, we are using the summer league to define each players’ role and determine what the best rotation will be heading into the season,” said Scholl. “We have had steady contributors so far this summer.”

For Scholl and his staff, it will truly be a process.

“We have a talented group of players that consistently show up to offseason training,” he added. “However, the seniors that graduated had a lot of chemistry and learned to communicate well on the court which is something our young group needs to work on this summer. Defense will be a priority as it always is for our program. This young group will need to learn to work together and play team defense to be competitive.”
