Summer playground program begins June 17

Summer break is here! What are your plans for the summer?

Not to be a downer, but looking ahead to next school year, the first day for students in grades kindergarten, five and nine will be Aug. 26. The first day for all students is Aug. 27.

Also regarding next school year, Salisbury Township School District is hiring instructional assistants, bus drivers and food service workers.

One last reminder for the Salisbury Township summer playground program which begins June 17. It will be held at Devonshire, Green Acres, Laubach and Lindberg parks. Registration forms will be available at the parks and need to be filled out on the first day you attend.

Also at the parks, you can now reserve a Salisbury park pavilion online if you need a large space for a gathering. No need to fill out a form and drop it off at the township building. Your deposit will need to be paid by credit card.

The next free sports physicals at Coca-Cola Park will be 2-5:45 p.m. June 25.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo has some new inhabitants. The red panda exhibit opened June 7. Why not take some time this summer to visit these adorable little brothers Cosmo and Meeko?

The Allentown Public Library, 1210 Hamilton St., Allentown, will hold a “Beach Reads Book Sale” 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 12. The sale will include paperbacks, children’s books, CDs and DVDs. For more information, visit allentownpl.org.

DeSales University is holding an event entitled “Safeguarding Seniors: A Symposium Promoting Dignity, Security and Advocacy.” This will be an informative evening on preventing elder abuse. The keynote speaker will be Paul Greenwood, LLB. There will be speakers, testimonies from elder abuse victims, bingo and more. This event will be held noon to 4 p.m. June 25.

Yard waste drop-offs are open. The Franko site will be open June 13, 15 and 24. Devonshire will be open June 17, 20 and 22. As always, hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
