LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Splish splash: Coplay Borough pool opens

Coplay’s Parkway Pool, at Second and Keefer streets, opened June 8 - a warm, mostly sunny day with large, fluffy clouds passing overhead. The nice weather brought a brisk first-day attendance.

The borough public works department worked hard to prepare the pool for a summer of fun. At its opening, the pool was sparkling.

Pool manager Sally Bates, of Whitehall, said she was excited for the pool opening and expects a successful season. She said she and her three youngsters spent a lot of time at the pool over the past four years.

As a first-year pool manager, Bates said she wants the pool open as much as possible and is open to suggestions to make each day fun for kids and their families.

Pool hours are set for noon-7 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. The pool is closed Mondays.

Bates noted that there is a possibility a vendor has been found to open the concession stand, which has been vacant the past few pool seasons. She did not share the name of the potential vendor.

Lifeguard Elijah Fox, of Whitehall, was eagle-eyed on his perch as he performed his duties. He plans to study psychology or early childhood education at Slippery Rock University after high school graduation.

Three pool staff members, Logan Lemak and Jackson Rozycki, of Whitehall, and Andrew Sodl, of Coplay, seemed excited to be working at and spending the summer at the pool.

Deborah Twining-Gossett attended the pool’s opening day with her two young daughters, Shiloh and Catalina. They said they plan to visit the pool frequently over the summer.

Youngsters Jayce and Lala Martinez and Messiah Williams were having fun in the shallow end of the pool as their aunt from Bethlehem watched.

Plans are being made for the Aqua Zumba class, a longtime event at the borough pool, to resume.

The pool season culminates in free swimming during the Coplay Community Days Festival, to be held this year Aug. 23-25.

Season passes for the pool are available from the Coplay Borough office, 98 S. Fourth St. Call 610-262-6088 or visit coplayborough.org for information and pricing.
