Draft resolution for funding fire companies progresses

A moment of silence was observed for the late Susan J. Smith at the start of June 6 Upper Milford Township Supervisor meeting.

Smith, an ardent supporter of the township’s firefighters, served as a supervisor from 2000-2006 and was an active member of the Upper Milford Planning Committee for 37 years.

Pamela Hall submitted her resignation from the recreation committee. She is succeeded by James Hayes who will fill the term ending Jan. 6, 2025.

A draft resolution on funding procedures for both fire companies was the focus of the meeting.

With a fire tax being considered, other options were voiced as the supervisors continue to discuss ways on how to best meet the needs of both stations.

At one point, Western District Fire Company Chief Michael Kline questioned the logic of these ongoing discussions, especially with other stations in the area folding, resulting in neighboring townships relying on them for assistance.

Kline voiced another option to consider, having a paid fire commissioner in charge of both stations, similar to the setups of Salisbury Township and Upper Macungie Township.

According to Kline, neither township fire chief would lose money on a daytime call this way.

He reminded everyone both fire stations are staffed with volunteers who do their best to keep everyone safe, regardless of where the call is coming from.

Township Manager Bud Carter requested to meet with representatives of both fire stations to discuss the draft resolution. An update related to those discussions is expected at the next meeting, scheduled for June 20.
