The Birches - A new home for seniors

The Birches on Freemansburg Avenue in Bethlehem Township is the newest senior living facility in the area, and, “the only one in Bethlehem Township,” said Director of Sales and Marketing Jillian Berry.

With 52 personal care apartments and 41 memory care apartments, the Birches is licensed for 130 total residents. The Birches is part of the Heritage Senior Living Management group.

The Birches is not just another senior living facility. Berry explains that the staff is specifically trained in the Positive Approach to Care methodology -founded and taught by Teepa Snow. The mission of PAC is for caretakers to use their talents and abilities to develop awareness, knowledge and skill with all people, that will transform what exists into a more positive dementia care culture. The PAC core values are based on building relationships that are authentic, empowering, compassionate and curious. Teepa Snow’s mission is to change the culture of dementia care and decrease the stigma around dementia through affordable, and positive, educational training. PAC serves ALL people connected to those living with brain change and dementia

When entering the Birches one cannot help but notice the high ceilings, wide welcoming hallways and the use of natural lighting engulfing spacious areas for residents. The dining area, managed by Dining Service Director Ben Kushner, a graduate of the culinary program at Northampton Community College, will be preparing and serving American Standard cuisine. He will also be hosting cooking demos for the residents. Kushner has a flair for Asian style cooking and makes a very popular vegetable lasagna.

Residents have a large selection of daily activities they may choose to participate in – and equally – as many quiet, relaxing options. An enclosed garden courtyard provides a safe area for independent residents seeking solitude. A movie theater, beauty parlor, activities room, exercise room and Fox rehab, are available, in house, to all residents. Berry stressed that “the focus is on the resident; their needs and safety are our priority.”
