’Canes notch third
It didn’t matter what the opposing team threw at Liberty this postseason or what Mother Nature tried to pull. None of it was enough to stop the Hurricanes from winning their third straight District 11 6A championship last week following a 7-4 victory over Parkland.
Rain delayed the completion of the outcome by a day, but it may have been inevitable that the Hurricanes were on their way toward a third straight title in this golden era of Liberty baseball.
“The district title is always big for us because it’s the validation of all the work you and the team put in,” said head coach Andy Pitsilos. “This is satisfying because we had to do it the hard way, pitching multiple pitchers, coming back from rain delays, etc. It was a total team effort.”
It was the second straight district game the Hurricanes had to come back from a rain delay, but this time they resumed play on Thursday with a 7-3 lead and held on.
Dayton Aguiar had three hits to lead the Hurricanes and Mike Mariano Jr. pitched the final four innings on Thursday to secure the district title.
Liberty didn’t score in the second day of action, but used a five-run, second-inning to build the lead they needed to win their fifth district crown in seven years.
With two EPC championships sandwiched in between their last three district championships, Liberty (20-5) has enjoyed a magical run.
“This team is special because of their grit,” Pitsilos said. “Many people didn’t think this team would be where we are. The kids took that to heart and worked hard to prove the doubters wrong.”
“It’s a three-peat for them,” said Parkland head coach Kurt Weber via the Parkland Press. “We had a three-peat. I remember thinking back then that we were like a little college program. That’s kind of what they are. They have multiple grades of players the last 3-4 years that are all playing in college. You add the talent to the coaching staff that they have and they’re just hard to beat right now.”
Now, can this group add one more piece of elusive hardware to their treasure chest with a run in the PIAA tournament?
